Oral Medication

Oral medication treatment option has always been well accepted for most patients, as it involves a simple dosage regime daily and otherwise minimal side effects. And not everyone is prepare surgical options for hair loss such as a hair transplant.

These treatments are approved by the FDA for hair loss treatment and numerous articles have been published on the efficacy of the treatments.
There is currently only one oral medication that is FDA approved and used specifically for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (MPHL). This comes in a tablet form that is taken once a day. In MPHL, there is an over production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is produced when testosterone is converted by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. DHT suffocates and causes hair loss in susceptible males and to a lesser extent, females as well.

The oral medication works to stop the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme action. As a result, there is a decrease of DHT level in the scalp. This will lead to hair growth and thickening of existing hairs. The medication needs to be taken continuously for at least 12 months in order to achieve results. Remember when it comes to oral medication, it takes 3 months to slow (the hair loss). 3 months to grow (for any new hair to start growing) and 3 months to show (any obvious growth)

The number of patients who experience sexual dysfunction such as erection issues are a small minority at 1 %. Very often, the side effects are transient, meaning that they go away as the body gets accustomed to the medication. In others, the side effects stop only when the medication is discontinued.
To date, oral medication is prescribed mainly for men, but in certain instances, post-menopausal women have also benefitted too. This is based on a case-by-case basis, subject to a thorough evaluation by the doctor in charge.

Topical Hairspray

Minoxidil 5% is a topical hair spray that has been proven to stimulate hair growth. Applied once or twice a night, men and women will benefit from thicker, fuller hair after 6 months of continuous use. Minoxidil is very well tolerated, but occasionally, some may develop scalp irritation with prolonged use.

About Low Level Laser Therapy

What is LLLT?

LLLT is an acronym for Low Level Light Therapy. This refers to a therapy that utilizes laser or light energy below a specific energy threshold and within a specific wavelength. Light sources used for LLLT may include laser and LED devices. Laser devices used for LLLT are also referred to as cold lasers. LLLT devices produce no heat, are safe and cannot burn or injure the skin.

How does LLLT work?

Multiple clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of Low-Level Laser Therapy in promoting hair growth in men with androgenetic alopecia. The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but the most recent research has identified that LLLT is absorbed into the cells, triggering enhanced cellular activity. In other words, the theory is that LLLT makes aging cells more active, thereby increasing their effectiveness in hair growth.

Are there any medical studies (clinical trials) that support the use of LLLT for hair growth?

Over the past six to seven years, multiple studies have found that LLLT is an effective hair growth treatment for men afflicted with androgenetic alopecia.

If 3 – 4 times a week has good results, will more frequent sessions yield a better result?

There is no evidence that increased Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) will provide better results. LLLT should only be used as prescribed. Each LLLT session should be followed by a period of rest. This translates into alternating session days.

How long will I need to continue LLLT sessions?

Hair loss is a progressive condition. If untreated, you can expect to lose more hair over time. After the initial 4 to 6 month LLLT treatment period, you should continue sessions once or twice per week to maintain your hair quality.

Is iGrow® safe to use at home?

The iGrow® has been specially designed with safety features for at-home, office and travel use, including a safety mechanism controlling both laser and LED devices. In addition, the iGrow® is designed so that it can only be turned on when it is firmly placed on your head. The iGrow® is a safe and effective laser hair treatment for use at home or while travelling.
