Acne Medical Treatment

The crucial step in treating acne is to first determine the severity of the condition and the previous treatments done.

This is why M & W Doctors will first go through thorough history with our patients and have a thorough examination of the patient’s skin condition.

For Grade1 and 2 Acne, just a simple prescription of topical medical treatment will adequately treat such acne conditions. There is no need for expensive acne treatments involving machines and lasers or peels.

Below are patients who have benefited from acne medical therapy:

skin6

These patients on the left have grade 2 acne and are suitable candidates for medical therapy for complete resolution of their acne.

skin7

This lady on the left have grade 3 acne that will respond well to medical treatment.

For Grade 4 acne and more recalcitrant acne cases, a combination of medication, topical therapy and possibly the use of chemical peels or acne lasers can help treat them adequately. Our doctors will discuss these options during the consultation.

Intralesional Steroids

Having to face your business partners or client, or attending social functions with acnes on your face can be awfully distressing! This fast acne removal treatment will definitely provide a swift and effective solution.

Mild steroids administered directly in small doses into a few isolated acne cysts or nodules can help reduce redness and inflammation and relieve the pain associated with these cysts.

Plagued by Acne scars??

Scars have different shapes and depths and require different intensity of scar treatments for its effective improvement and removal. In M & W, we provide a comprehensive array of treatment options to address all forms of acne scars from Ice pic scars, boxcart scars to rolling scars.

Fractional CO2 Lasers

(Treating DEEP Acne Scars and Facial Scars with reduced risks of recovery and complications)

The best way to treat acne scars is still to prevent acne itself or to treat mild acne adequately and completely before it progresses to moderate acne-red inflamed papules or “bumps” on the skin. If such appears, inadvertently when the acne subsides, there will be skin blemishes such as patches of pigmentation or scars (“crater”, “icepick”, or “rolling” scars).

Needless to say acne treatment is a lot more effective than acne scar or pigmentation treatment.

Traditional or ablative means of treating acne scars, such as tradition CO2 or Erbium Lasers, Chemical Peels, Dermabrasions, involves “stripping” or ablation of the superficial layers of the skin, and reducing the appearance of scars. However these procedures are invasive, needing long recoveries, and carry inherent risks of complications such as Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

The Fractional Technology “fractionates” or “splits up” the laser into finer rays, create “zones of lasered skin” with unaffected skin shown above. It allows a fractional removal of scar tissue, collagen remodelling and yet a faster recovery. There is also a significant lower risk of hyperpigmentation compared to ablative treatments.

The number of treatments needed will depend on the severity of the acne scars, ranging from 3-5 treatments for shallow scars to 8-10 for severe ones.

Why Deep Fractional eCO2 Laser Treatment for deep surface scars?

  1. it offers effective results¹
  2. Adjustable to different depths with different energy settings
  3. Offers better recovery and less risks as compared to full ablative lasers²

E-matrix Treatment

skin18

Resurfacing is an increasingly popular procedure for patients wishing to achieve smoother complexions and to significantly improve facial lines and scars.

However the current fractional lasers have limitations – higher energy settings can expose the superficial skin to more damage; hence it is not suitable for darker skin types. They have a significant recovery time, risks of hyperpigmentation post procedure

Benefits of eMatrix

E- Matrix is a non-laser, non-light fractionated bi-polar radiofrequency technology which delivers significant deep and volumetric dermal impact to maximize collagen remodelling without causing unwanted epidermal damage. As a result of its minimal impact on the superficial skin, it imposes a shorter recovery time and is suitable for ALL skin types.

Shorter Recovery Time

E-Matrix has little or minimal down-time, with recoveries significantly shorter than the fractional laser. Depending on the extent of the treatment, most patients are back to work the next day and any short-term side effects such as redness can be covered by make-up.

Clinical Results

Clinical Studies show improvement in skin brightness (83%), skin tightness (83%), wrinkles (90%) and acne scars.skin19

Why E-Matrix for light scars?

  • FDA approved treatment¹
  • Recover faster than traditional lasers
  • Lower risks of laser complications such as post laser pigmentation
  • Most suitable for dark skin acne scar treatment
  • Tighten skin and reduce wrinkles as well with collagen remodelling²

Subcision

Acne Scar Subcision is a simple procedure to help with treating deep facial scars (especially rolling and boxcar scars’ see pictures above) that resulted from severe acne. Subcision’s aim is to “release” the deep scar tissue that is causing deep depressed scars without causing more trauma and more scarring at the mean time.

Why Subcision @ M & W for deep rolling scars?

  • Releases deep skin scars that lasers cannot reach¹
  • Treats deep skin depressions
  • Improved results when combined with dermal fillers²

Typically subcision is performed with local anaesthesia so minimal discomfort is felt during the procedure. There might be mild swelling and bruising post treatment which will resolve in 4-7 days.   Typically a few subcisions are needed for best results. And in cases of severe scaring, combination treatments such as surface fractional laser treatment and intradermal filling with dermal fillers will distinctly improve clinical results.

Aquaglossy Acne Scar Treatment

eyes19

Fillers raises depressed scars such as crater, boxcart and rolling scars, making the skin smoother and more blemish-free.

Studies have shown that when botulinium (Botox, dysport) and fillers are administered to the skin:
1) Skin pores are reduced
2) Skin texture improves and is smoother, shinier.
3) Acne scars get less obvious
4) Hydration of the skin improves noticeably
5) Reduces dark eye circles and wrinkles *

(*Published in the Archives of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, “Effects of Injection Depth and Volume of Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid in Human Dermis on Skin Texture, Hydration, and Thickness ” Dr Kim came to this conclusion :
Fillers injected into the skin not only improved the hydration of the skin but also the skin texture distinctly.)

How does Aquaglossy treatments complement fractional co2 scar treatments?

  • It fills up deep scars such as rolling scars that is difficult to assess via fractional co2 laser
  • It treats the scar from “inside out” while fractional lasers work from “outside in”
  • It has minimal down-time which makes it friendlier to patient’s social schedules as compared to lasers.

In M & W, we believe combining treatments such as fractional lasers, e-matrix and aquaglossy fillers, will help to more comprehensively address acne scar issues, and have a more superior result than each solo treatments alone.
